2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 33: Nasarawa United debunks alleged attack on Plateau United fans

Posted : 17 April 2025

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Nasarawa United has debunked reports that one of their supporters attacked a visiting Plateau United player with a sharp object.

The alleged incident occurred after both teams clashed in a Matchday 33 encounter, which ended 3-2 in favor of the hosts at the Lafia Township Stadium in Nasarawa.

Nasarawa claimed that the alleged attacker was not one of their supporters and that the attack may have been provoked by the actions of the Plateau player.

“After our investigation, contrary to the sensationalized reports, a physical altercation did occur between a spectator, who is not a supporter of our club, and Plateau United’s Vincent Temitope after the full-time whistle had been blown and spectators were making their way out of the stadium,” part of the statement read.

“However, eyewitnesses confirmed that the spectator used his sharp fingers, not a knife or any other dangerous weapon as was purportedly reported, to slightly bruise the player’s neck. The player had earlier provoked the situation by attempting to hit the spectator with a nearby plastic chair before he was disarmed.”

The club also explained that the state’s football governing body immediately intervened, restoring order as a result.

“The State Football Association immediately intervened and ensured the spectator was arrested by the police personnel deployed to the stadium and kept under their custody for further investigation. Meanwhile, Vincent Temitope was taken to a nearby medical facility where his bruises were treated before being reunited with his teammates at their hotel accommodation.”

Nasarawa United’s statement comes after NPFL organizers fined the club N6 million for the alleged violence following their game against Plateau United.

The club was fined N1 million for failure to provide adequate security, another N1 million for failing to ensure the proper conduct of their supporters in violation of Rule C9, and N1 million for medical expenses for Vincent Temitope, who was assaulted, in breach of Rule C11.

The club is also required to pay N3 million for repeated breaches of the NPFL Framework and Rules, along with the additional punishment of having their home fixtures moved from Lafia to the Pantami Stadium in Gombe.
