2023 CAFWCL: Sundowns face Sporting Casablanca for the first time

Posted : 07 November 2023
Mamelodi Sundowns faced Sporting Casablanca for the first time in the 2023 CAFWCL. While they had not faced Casablanca before, Sundowns had played Moroccan opponents twice previously. In their previous encounters against Moroccan teams, Sundowns struggled, drawing 0-0 against AS FAR in 2021 and suffering a 4-0 loss in the 2022 final.

Sundowns had a good track record in scoring, having failed to score in only three games at the finals. Their matches against Moroccan teams posed a challenge. Moroccan clubs remained undefeated against teams from Southern Africa, including Sundowns. AS FAR also defeated Zambian team Green Buffaloes in the 2022 group stages.

Sundowns had a strong start in the current edition, defeating JKT Queens of Tanzania 2-0. This marked their third consecutive opening game victory at the finals. They remained undefeated in seven group games at the finals, with a 6-1 win-draw record.

The match against JKT Queens saw Sundowns secure their ninth clean sheet in the finals. They had a history of keeping clean sheets in group games, having conceded only once in the group stage in 2022.

Mamelodi Sundowns had won both their games against East African clubs at the finals without conceding a goal. In their opening game against JKT Queens, they managed to win 2-0, their fourth victory by two or more goals in the finals.

SC Casablanca, on the other hand, began with a 1-1 draw against Athletico Abidjan in their opening Group A game. N’Guessan Koffi scored Casablanca's first goal at the finals, making history by scoring against a club from her home country. This marked the first time a Moroccan club at the finals failed to win their first game.

SC Casablanca's goalkeeper Imane Abdelahad made seven saves in their opening game, with a save success rate of 87.5%. Two members of the current SC Casablanca squad, Imane Abdelahad and Chaymaa Mourtaji, were part of the Moroccan national women's team squad that lost to South Africa in the 2022 WAFCON Final.
