The hopes of Nigeria's last representative in the CAF Champions League, Rivers United FC, have been further dashed as Remo Stars FC earned a respectable 2-1 win in the rescheduled Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 21 played at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

Although the Pride of Rivers drew first blood and took the lead in the 19th minute via a spot-kick converted by Andy Okpe, the home side rallied and scored two goals in the second half to secure the three maximum points.

The Sky Blue Stars' redemptive journey began with Hadi Haruna scoring the equalizer in the 68th minute before Franck Mawuena netted on the stroke of the 83rd minute to give the home fans good news to savor.

Remo Stars’ victory has pushed them to 2nd position on the log with 56 points, just a point separating them from the league leaders, Rangers International FC.

Remo also pushed champions Enyimba FC down to 3rd position.

Meanwhile, the defeat, the second in a row, has left Rivers United’s continental aspirations in tatters as they are currently 13th on the log with 40 points from 28 matches.

They lost their previous encounter against Bayelsa United with a similar scoreline. The Port Harcourt-based side, however, has four outstanding games to play.

It should be recalled that the league had gone on another break until May 25th to enable Rivers United to play their outstanding matches which they accumulated while playing in the CAF Confederation Cup.

They were eliminated in the second tier continental league 2-1 by USM Algiers at the quarter-final stage.

The league will return with matchday 33 encounters across the country.

Rivers United's remaining four fixtures:

Kwara Utd vs Rivers Utd – May 8

Sunshine Stars vs Rivers United – May 11

Abia Warriors vs Rivers Utd – May 15

Rivers United vs Niger Tornadoes – May 19
