2023/2024 NPFL Match Day 26: Sporting Lagos FC extends home wins to 13, remains unbeaten for a year

Posted : 18 March 2024

Sporting Lagos FC extended their unbeaten home streak to 13 matches on Sunday with a comfortable 2-0 win over visiting Kwara United FC in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 26.

The Head Coach of Sporting Lagos FC, Paul Offor, stated after the match that the two first-half goals against Kwara United FC were the killer strategy to silence the visitors.

Offor, speaking on the sidelines of the Match Day 26 fixtures between the Tech Boys and the Afonja Warlords at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, mentioned that the home support from the fans was good motivation for his team.

Sporting Lagos FC bounced back from their 0-1 away loss to Niger Tornadoes in Kaduna to defeat Kwara United FC 2-0, with both goals scored in the first half, in the 7th and 43rd minutes.

In-form Paschal Durugbor scored the first goal in the 7th minute from a wide cross, while Aliu Salawudeen added the second goal in the 43rd minute.

Offor, commenting on his team's 13-match unbeaten home streak, emphasized the importance of home wins in building the team.

"I am excited about the win, which is the most important thing in the game, and we were able to get it. It was a solid performance from the team, and we got the two first-half goals, which was the strategy and what we wanted to do. The quick goals allowed us to kill the game early, and we did just that. Our results have turned things around for us because if we are not getting the results, the fans will be angry with us; when we score and win, we create excitement," he said.

Kwara United FC Coach, Kabiru Dogo, mentioned that his team lacked cutting edges, which led to the unwanted results.

"We missed several scoring opportunities, which is not good for us. The strikers failed to convert their chances. When we cannot convert our chances, there is little we can do; we will have to work with what we have," he said.

Sporting Lagos FC have yet to lose a match at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena since the league started and have been able to maintain a 13-match unbeaten streak at the stadium.

Coach Offor made three changes to the team that lost to Niger Tornadoes, with Christian Nwoke returning in goal, Tochukwu Micheal leading the midfield, and Junior Lokosa leading the forward line. Additionally, Jonathan Alukwu returned to the team after a long layoff due to injury, replacing the first goal scorer Durugbor in the 25th minute for technical reasons.
