Rivers United FC received a less than impressive record on their return to the domestic league as Bendel Insurance FC ensured that both teams shared the spoils on Thursday.
The Pride of Rivers had been away on continental duty for four league matches, but their first match at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt ended unfavorably as the visiting Benin Arsenals forced them to a 1-1 draw.
Chisom Okereke scored the only goal for Bendel Insurance in the 21st minute of play, opening his goal account for Insurance FC after joining the team on loan from the defending champions, Enyimba International FC.
Chisom Okereke seized on a loose ball in Rivers' area, following a fine line-breaking pass by Paul Obata from the left flank and wasted no time jabbing the ball into the net to upset their hosts.
A defensive blunder by Bendel Insurance in the 38th minute, however, gave room for the hosts to come from behind, leveling up and restoring their pride before the halftime whistle.
The Pride of Rivers got their equalizer through their captain Nyima Nwagua in the 38th minute of play.
