2023/2024 NPFL Match Day 14: Akwa Utd FC Coach, Osho slams Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri's turf

Posted : 18 December 2023

Not satisfied with the unfortunate loss to Heartland FC of Owerri in Match Day 14 of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), a game played at Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri, the Head Coach of Akwa United FC, Fatai Osho, has criticized the playing turf of the stadium, describing it as unsuitable for standard league matches.

Osho, reacting to the level of play in the match after the lone-goal encounter against Heartland FC, attributed his side's loss to the bad pitch.

Osho also used the opportunity to call on the management of the NPFL to reassess the stadium pitch, emphasizing that both teams couldn't give their best due to the poor state of the turf.

He revealed that his team would enter the transfer window to sign players who would help the team score goals, which he described as the challenge for his side this season.

"Heartland should do well to leave this ground. It's not helping their football and not helping everybody coming here.

"This is not good for Nigerian players. They need to leave this place. The organizers seriously need to look into this issue because it is not even good for hockey. It's a no-no, honestly.

"You can't judge both teams on this surface. You need to see when we played Lobi Stars; we played better, but here, you can't do it. Anytime we tried to do that, we conceded a goal. This is not good for football.

"Over time we have not been doing well. We try our utmost best to encourage our players, and we are waiting for the January window to make one or two additions so that going forward, we will create a lot of threats.

"We are quite aware, and we just have to add some bite to that attack. You are going to see a complete turnaround between now and January."
