Former Super Eagles winger and Technical Director of the 1XCUP, Waidi Akanni, has unveiled a new community-driven structure for the 2026 edition of the competition, as registration officially opens on June 1.
The tournament, scheduled to run from July to October 2026, will now operate under the traditional Lagos “IBILE” format—a system designed to strengthen grassroots participation, reduce travel burdens for local clubs, and deepen community rivalry across the state.
Akanni explained that the revamped structure reflects the organisers’ commitment to building a more organized and talent-focused competition.
Former international winger Dimeji Lawal will serve as the General Manager of the tournament.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing grassroots football competitions, the 1XCUP continues to position itself as a major platform for discovering emerging talents from local communities.
Under the new format, participating teams will compete within the five traditional divisions of Lagos State, popularly known as IBILE:
Ikorodu
Badagry
Ikeja
Lagos Island
Epe
According to the organisers, the zoning system will help eliminate the logistical and financial difficulties often faced by amateur clubs during statewide competitions, while also creating intense local rivalries capable of attracting stronger fan engagement.
The competition is expected to attract over 100 grassroots clubs during the qualifying stages. At the end of the divisional rounds, 24 teams will advance into six groups for the main tournament phase before the knockout rounds commence.
Organisers also confirmed that the 2026 edition will feature a ₦20 million prize pool, making it one of the most lucrative grassroots football tournaments in the country.
A major highlight of the competition remains its strict grassroots focus, with professional league players barred from participation to ensure undiscovered local talents receive maximum exposure.
With the introduction of the IBILE model, the 1XCUP hopes to blend football development with community identity, creating a tournament that celebrates both competition and the rich football culture across Lagos State.
The restructuring highlights a strategic move toward sustainable sports development at the local level. By empowering these distinct divisions, the tournament ensures that raw talent can emerge without logistical hindrances. This community-centric framework sets a high benchmark for youth tournaments across Nigeria, promising an unforgettable season of high-stakes grassroots football.
