Ten female football teams will compete for honours in the 1st Governor Douye Diri Female Pre-Season Football Tournament in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, from October 18 to 25, 2025.
The competition, featuring eight NWFL clubs and two non-league teams, aims to help participants prepare for the upcoming Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) season slated to begin later this month.
Group A comprises Bayelsa Queens (host), Delta Queens, Rivers Angels, Imo Strikers, and Nasarawa Amazons, while Group B features Bayelsa Princesses, FC Robo, Abia Angels, Edo Queens, and Heartland Queens of Owerri.
According to the official draw, the tournament will be played in two groups of five teams each. Matchday One fixtures will see Bayelsa Princesses take on FC Robo at 10:00 a.m., followed by Abia Angels versus Edo Queens at 12:00 p.m. at the Government House Pitch, while Heartland Queens will observe a bye.
At the Samson Siasia Stadium, Rivers Angels will face Imo Strikers at 8:00 a.m., and hosts Bayelsa Queens will lock horns with Delta Queens in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
In his address, Pastor Robin Apreala, Chairman of Bayelsa Queens and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), assured all teams of fairness and professionalism throughout the tournament. He urged referees to maintain integrity in their officiating.
Apreala explained that the essence of the competition was to prepare NWFL teams ahead of the new season, noting that the number of participating clubs shows how well the initiative has been received. He expressed appreciation to Governor Douye Diri, his deputy Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, for their support in hosting the event in Yenagoa.
Also speaking, Director of the Tournament, Mr. Diseye Nwankwe, confirmed that the ten teams will compete in two groups, with matches commencing on Sunday, October 18, 2025, at the Samson Siasia Stadium.
He added that due to Bayelsa United’s fixture against Kun Khalifat, the Rivers Angels vs Imo Strikers match would be played at the Government House Pitch, Onopa, by 8:00 a.m., while Wednesday will serve as a rest day for all teams.
