Nigeria’s Super Falcons’ bid to retain their Women Africa Cup of Nations title suffered a painful setback on Sunday as they were edged 1–0 by Cameroon in a tense quarter-final encounter in Casablanca.

The defeat brought an abrupt end to Nigeria’s hopes of defending the continental crown, despite a dominant second-half display in which the Falcons repeatedly pushed the Indomitable Lionesses deep into their own territory.

Cameroon needed just one decisive moment to settle the contest, taking the lead in the 19th minute from a well-executed free kick that caught Nigeria on the back foot.

The early setback, however, did little to dampen the Falcons’ response. Nigeria quickly took control of the game, applying sustained pressure and creating opportunities that could have restored parity before the interval.

Gift Monday and Jennifer Echegini came closest to finding the breakthrough, but Cameroon’s Portugal-based goalkeeper Michaely produced a commanding performance to keep Nigeria at bay.

Coach Justin Madugu responded to the situation with a series of attacking changes, bringing on Uchenna Kanu for Rinsola Babajide in the 38th minute before introducing Toni Payne, Esther Okoronkwo and Asisat Oshoala after the restart.

The changes added further urgency to Nigeria’s attack, with the Falcons enjoying territorial superiority and spending long periods around the Cameroonian penalty area.

Yet, for all their possession, pressure and attacking intent, the seven-time African champions could not find the finishing touch needed to force the game level.

Cameroon’s disciplined defensive structure survived a sustained Nigerian assault, including a frantic spell deep into stoppage time, to secure their passage into the next round.

For Nigeria, attention now turns from continental glory to another crucial assignment. The Falcons are expected to face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana later this week in a decisive play-off, with a place in the Inter-Continental play-off for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil at stake.

Having seen their title defence end prematurely, the Falcons will now have to quickly regroup and channel their disappointment into a renewed push for a World Cup place.
