13th African Games: Nigeria's Golden Arrows Storm Accra

Posted : 13 March 2024

Nigeria's senior national men's handball team, otherwise known as the Golden Arrows, has arrived in Accra, Ghana, ahead of the start of the handball event of the 13th Africa Games.

The Golden Arrows have been undergoing an intensive training program at the National Institute of Sports in Lagos under the tutelage of Coach Solomon Yola, aiming to continue their excellent form from the Africa Men's Handball Nations Cup in Egypt.

A final list of 14 players has also been released, consisting of some players who participated in the Nations Cup and a few players from Nigeria's under-20 team, which came third at the recently concluded IHF Trophy Africa Zone 3, also held in Ghana.

Some of the players include Farouk Yusuf from Granollers in Spain, Stephen Sesugh from Aspac Handball Club in Benin Republic, as well as Gbenga Cole, who plays in Morocco.

Nigeria will play in Group A alongside African champion Egypt, Mali, and Togo, while Group B consists of DR Congo, Kenya, Benin Republic, and host Ghana.

The Golden Arrows will begin their campaign against Togo on Wednesday at 5 pm Nigerian time, and all matches will be played at the Borteyman Sports Complex, the same venue that hosted the IHF Trophy Africa Zone 3 Phase a few weeks ago.

The Golden Arrows have finished third on the podium of the African Games three times: in Cairo '91, Harare '95, and in Abuja 2023, while they finished fourth in Brazzaville 2015.
