12 Clubs Battle for Two Promotion Tickets at NWFL Nationwide Tournament in Aba

The race for promotion to the 2027 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship will gather momentum when 12 clubs converge on Aba, Abia State, for the 2026 NWFL Nationwide Competition, scheduled to take place from Aug. 15 to Aug. 23.

The tournament, organised by the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), represents the final pathway for ambitious grassroots clubs seeking promotion from the third tier to the second division of Nigerian women's football.

With only two promotion places available, the week-long competition is expected to produce fierce contests as every club seeks to keep its dream of climbing the women's football ladder alive.

According to a statement by the NWFL Media Director, Samuel Ahmadu, the participating teams have been drawn into four groups of three.

Group A: Kwara United Queens FC, Solo Wonders Babes FC and Spunky Blazers FA.

Group B: C2E Sports Academy, Bayelsa Princesses FC and Lakeside Queens FC.

Group C: Onimarg FC, Ubakala Babes FC and NAF Queens FC.

Group D: Plateau United Queens FC, Obosa Football Academy and Osklean FC.

Only the winners of the four groups will advance to the semi-finals, where victories will automatically secure promotion to the 2027 NWFL Championship before the successful teams contest the final to determine the overall champions.

Teams are expected to arrive in Aba on Aug. 15 for accreditation and a mandatory pre-competition meeting, while the group-stage matches will be played on Aug. 16, 18 and 19.

Following a rest day, the semi-finals will be held on Aug. 21, with the championship final scheduled for Aug. 23.

NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi described the competition as a vital component of the league's long-term development strategy.

She said the NWFL Nationwide Championship continues to provide a structured platform for emerging clubs to compete, develop and earn promotion on merit.

Shabi also commended the Abia State Government, the Local Organising Committee, and other stakeholders for hosting the tournament, while urging participating clubs to uphold discipline, professionalism, and the spirit of fair play.

Over the years, the NWFL Nationwide Competition has produced several clubs that have gone on to establish themselves in both the Championship and the top-flight Premiership.

This year's edition offers another opportunity for aspiring teams to write their own success stories, with every match carrying the weight of promotion ambitions.

By the end of the competition on Aug. 23, only one club will lift the trophy, while two teams will earn the right to compete in the 2027 NWFL Championship, taking a significant step towards elite women's football in Nigeria.
