10-Woman Super Falcons Overcome Zambia

Posted : 03 August 2026

Nigeria's Super Falcons produced a spirited defensive display to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia's Copper Queens on Saturday night in Rabat, overcoming the challenge of playing with 10 women for more than half of the match.

The reigning African champions claimed all three points courtesy of an early strike from Asisat Oshoala, whose composed finish in the eighth minute proved enough to separate the two sides in a fiercely contested Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) group-stage fixture.

Nigeria made a bright start and capitalised on their early dominance when Oshoala expertly controlled a well-weighted pass inside the penalty area before calmly slotting the ball past the Zambian goalkeeper.

The match took a dramatic turn before halftime as defender Tosin Demehin was sent off following a robust challenge involving Zambia captain Barbra Banda. Demehin had initially avoided punishment after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review identified an offside in the attacking move, but she was eventually shown a red card after a second confrontation with Banda in the 40th minute.

Reduced to 10 players, the Super Falcons adopted a more cautious approach in the second half. Head coach Justin Madugu responded with tactical adjustments, introducing defender Shukurat Oladipo in place of debutant Rofiat Imuran to reinforce the backline.

Zambia dominated possession after the restart and repeatedly threatened through Banda and Racheal Kundananji, but Nigeria's disciplined defensive organisation frustrated the Copper Queens throughout the remainder of the contest.

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie delivered another assured performance between the posts, while the Nigerian defence remained resolute under sustained pressure. The Super Falcons also posed occasional threats on the counterattack through Uchenna Kanu and substitute Esther Okoronkwo.

The victory marked Nigeria's second consecutive win over Zambia in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations and strengthened the Super Falcons' position in the race for a place in the knockout stage.

Nigeria will next face Egypt on Wednesday, Aug. 5, with the North Africans still seeking their first points of the tournament after losing their opening two matches.
