VCT EMEA Kicks Off Amid Scrutiny After Masters Santiago Performance

Posted : 07 April 2026

VCT EMEA Stage 1 has begun this week, bringing together twelve teams competing for three spots at Masters London in June. Despite the excitement, the region enters the season under scrutiny after a disappointing international showing at Masters Santiago, where Team Liquid failed to advance past the Swiss Stage, and Gentle Mates and BBL Esports exited early in the playoffs.

EMEA’s performance placed it as the second-weakest region globally, behind VCT China.

Part of the challenge stems from inexperience. Many of EMEA’s representatives were rookie rosters: BBL Esports had only recently debuted in tier-one play after winning last year’s Ascension tournament, while Team Liquid and Gentle Mates underwent major roster changes ahead of the 2026 season.

Rookie teams often struggle under international pressure, where fast-paced play and unpredictable strategies can overwhelm less experienced squads.

Additionally, recent meta shifts in VALORANT, including agent changes and Sentinels nerfs, have favored aggressive double-duelist playstyles. Historically, EMEA has excelled in methodical, slow-paced strategies, leaving teams ill-prepared for the rapid gameplay dominating other regions.

Analysts and former coaches have noted the region’s difficulties with teamfighting and adaptation to fast-paced metas, highlighting that these structural and strategic issues contributed to poor international results.

Beyond roster and meta challenges, systemic factors also impact EMEA’s competitive edge. The fragmented tier-two Challengers circuit limits cross-regional experience, slowing innovation and talent development.

Map pool struggles, particularly on Pearl and newer maps like Sunset and Corrode, further highlight the region’s difficulties compared to global counterparts.

Despite these challenges, EMEA has shown resilience in past years, with Fnatic and Team Heretics achieving strong results at global events.

While the region may currently lag behind rivals, the lessons from Masters Santiago could prompt a renewed focus on aggressive strategies, meta adaptation, and broader investment in talent and coaching infrastructure.

EMEA’s upcoming Stage 1 promises to be a critical opportunity to demonstrate growth and regain international competitiveness.
