Valve Revamps Counter-Strike 2 Ranking System with Major Adjustments

Posted : 26 February 2025

Valve has introduced significant updates to its Valve Regional Standings (VRS) model, the ranking system for Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) teams that determines invitations to major esports tournaments. The changes, implemented on February 24, 2025, revise how forfeits impact rankings and adjust the timing for when tournament data is recorded.

Under the new rules, forfeits will now be treated as standard losses in both online and offline matches, closing a loophole that previously allowed teams to withdraw without consequence. Additionally, tournament results will only be factored into the rankings once an event has fully concluded, preventing teams from being penalized mid-competition.

The revised data recording process addresses a key issue that arose earlier in the 2025 season. German esports organization GamerLegion previously missed out on a top-12 invitation to the BLAST Open Lisbon event while still competing at IEM Katowice, as prize money from the ongoing event was not included in its ranking calculations.

The new approach ensures that teams playing in overlapping events are not unfairly disadvantaged. Another major adjustment reduces the minimum match requirement for teams to be eligible for the VRS rankings, cutting it from 10 matches to just five, making it easier for new and emerging teams to qualify.

A further modification affects how prize money is factored into the ranking system. Valve now integrates club revenue used by major event organizers such as ESL FACEIT Group and the Esports World Cup into the VRS structure.

This revenue, which is separate from direct tournament prize money, serves as financial support for teams competing in select ESL-operated tournaments. By refining these key ranking metrics, Valve aims to create a more balanced and transparent qualification system for CS2 esports.
