Southeast Asia’s Mobile Gaming Boom Creates One of the World’s Biggest Esports Markets

Posted : 26 August 2026

Southeast Asia has established itself as a major mobile-first gaming region, driven by affordable smartphones, widespread connectivity, free-to-play titles and a strong social gaming culture. These factors have allowed mobile games to reach audiences that traditionally might not have had access to consoles or high-end gaming PCs.

The region’s gaming industry has also become a major force in esports. Popular titles such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Free Fire and Arena of Valor have developed huge followings, while major competitions attract millions of viewers across Southeast Asia.

According to Niko Partners, Southeast Asia had about 285.8 million gamers in 2024, with that figure projected to reach around 290 million in 2025. The market was previously forecast to generate $5.47 billion in 2025.

Mobile gaming drives the region

Smartphones have played a central role in Southeast Asia's gaming expansion. Affordable devices allow consumers to play without investing in dedicated consoles or gaming computers, while improvements in mobile internet have made online gaming increasingly accessible.

Free-to-play business models have also helped publishers reach wider audiences because players can begin playing without paying an upfront purchase price. Countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam have consequently become important markets for mobile game developers.

The scale of mobile gaming is particularly clear in Sensor Tower's Q1 2025 figures. Southeast Asia recorded approximately 1.93 billion mobile-game downloads during the quarter, placing the region second globally for game installs.

However, the region's enormous player base does not translate directly into spending. Southeast Asia generated about $625 million in mobile-game in-app purchase revenue during Q1 2025, highlighting the difference between its huge audience and relatively modest spending per player.

Indonesia leads downloads while Thailand tops revenue

Indonesia is the region's clear leader in mobile-game downloads. Players in the country recorded approximately 870 million installs in Q1 2025, a 9% increase from the previous quarter. The Philippines followed with 366 million downloads, while Vietnam registered 329 million.

Revenue rankings tell a different story. Thailand led Southeast Asia with around $162 million in mobile-game revenue during the quarter. Indonesia followed with $118 million, while Malaysia generated $103 million.

The contrast demonstrates that population and download volume are not necessarily indicators of how much players spend. Indonesia generated far more downloads than Thailand, yet Thailand produced significantly greater mobile-game revenue during the period.

Gaming has become mainstream

Gaming is no longer a niche form of entertainment in Southeast Asia. The region's large and youthful population has helped make games an important part of everyday digital culture.

Niko Partners' research estimates that the six major Southeast Asian gaming markets — Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam — contained around 290 million players in 2025. The number is expected to continue increasing as access to smartphones, connectivity and digital services expands.

The mobile-first nature of the market is especially important because smartphones combine gaming, communication and social interaction in a single device. That makes them particularly effective platforms for games built around communities, competition and social engagement.

A huge audience for mobile esports

The strength of mobile gaming has naturally translated into a substantial esports audience. Competitive mobile titles have become deeply embedded in youth culture, with tournaments attracting viewers from across the region.

The combination of accessible hardware, free-to-play games and highly social communities gives Southeast Asia an advantage when it comes to building large esports audiences. Players can participate without expensive equipment, while fans can follow tournaments through widely used video and social platforms.

The region's esports audience is also relatively young, creating significant long-term opportunities for publishers, tournament organizers, advertisers and sponsors.

Awareness is high, but regular viewing varies

Esports has achieved widespread recognition across Southeast Asia, although simply knowing about esports does not necessarily mean someone watches competitions regularly.

Vietnam stands out as one of the region's strongest markets for converting esports awareness into consistent viewership. Other markets, including Singapore, have high awareness but considerably lower rates of regular viewing.

That difference presents an important opportunity for the industry. Rather than simply increasing awareness, publishers and organizers can focus on converting occasional viewers into regular fans through stronger local competitions, community engagement and more accessible broadcasts.

Southeast Asia remains a major growth opportunity

The combination of hundreds of millions of players, enormous mobile-game download numbers and a growing esports culture makes Southeast Asia one of the most important gaming regions to watch.

While monetization remains a challenge compared with some wealthier markets, the sheer size and continued expansion of the player base provide considerable room for future growth. Niko Partners' earlier forecast projected Southeast Asia's games market could reach $6.47 billion by 2029, with the number of gamers rising to more than 324 million.

As smartphone ownership, connectivity and digital payments continue to develop, Southeast Asia's mobile gaming ecosystem is likely to remain a major force in both gaming and esports worldwide.
