SAGES Africa (Services for Africa Gaming & Esports) has unveiled the Mzansi Esports Champions 2024, a new tournament designed to spotlight African women in esports.
The competition will take place at the rAge Expo, a major gaming and tech event, from November 30th to December 1st, 2024, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The tournament is part of the Tekken Africa Queens Challenge, which is supported by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS).
The Mzansi Esports Champions aims to promote inclusivity and empower women within the gaming community. Eight competitors will represent their respective countries in a thrilling battle for a prize pool of $2,500 (£1,990), with the winner receiving $1,000 (£795).
The countries involved are Eswatini (Setsabile ‘Sugar’ Shabangu), Kenya (Sylvia ‘TheQueenArrow’ Wahome), Lesotho (Liteboho ‘EL’ Thebe), Madagascar (Safidy ‘Sentaku’ Andrianisoa), Malawi (Matimbe Gweyneth ‘Gwyn Stacy’ Edina), Namibia (Asante-Sana ‘ATMBYTES’ Maruwasa), South Africa (Zahraa ‘Iron-Fist’ Khan), and Zambia (Bwalia ‘LiaRose’ Nkumbula).
In addition to the tournament, there will be a series of meetings on November 29th aimed at connecting African esports professionals.
These discussions will focus on creating opportunities for women in the industry and fostering collaboration between various stakeholders. The meetings are organized through a partnership between SAGES Africa, the French Institute of South Africa, and the rAge Expo.
Désiré Koussawo, President of SAGES Africa, emphasized the organization’s commitment to nurturing African esports talent. He stated that through strategic partnerships, such as with the Institut français, they aim to elevate Africa’s role in the global esports ecosystem. This event follows the success of the Kongo Esports Champions 2024, hosted by SAGES Africa at the Manga & Geek Days Festival earlier this month.
