PGL teams up with 1xBet for PGL Major Copenhagen in esports betting partnership

Posted : 02 February 2024

In a strategic collaboration, esports tournament organizer PGL has joined forces with Cyprus-based online gambling company 1xBet for the upcoming PGL Major Copenhagen in Counter-Strike.

Set to unfold in Copenhagen, Denmark, from March 17th to 31st, this major marks the inaugural Counter-Strike 2 event after the transition away from CS:GO last year. The qualifying RMR events, integral to the Major, are scheduled throughout February.

PGL has designated 1xBet as the official betting partner for the PGL Major Copenhagen, emphasizing a partnership without delving into specific terms or details about included activations.

1xBet, in a post on X, declared itself the 'main partner' for the event. While PGL characterized the collaboration as a 'mutually beneficial partnership,' details and comments regarding the partnership remain undisclosed despite attempts for clarification.

1xBet, known for sponsoring various esports organizations, tournaments, and entities like the ESL Pro League and HLTV, positioned itself as a major player in the esports sponsorship landscape. However, the Cyprus-licensed betting company has faced controversies, with a Dutch court declaring bankruptcy in January 2023, a claim 1xBet disputes as it continues its operations.

Additionally, the company lost its UK license in 2019 following a Sunday Times investigation uncovering practices such as promoting topless female croupiers and allowing bets on cockfighting and children's sports, leading football clubs Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham to sever high-profile sponsorships.

Majors, being the pinnacle of the Counter-Strike esports calendar, garner exclusive support and funding from game developer Valve. Participating esports organizations receive in-game items with significant revenue potential, creating a dynamic intersection of competition, sponsorship, and fan engagement within the esports ecosystem.
