PGL Commits $22m Investment to Counter-Strike 2 Esports for 2027–2028

Posted : 13 March 2026

Esports tournament organiser PGL has revealed plans to invest a minimum of $22m (~£16.5m) into the Counter-Strike 2 competitive scene across 2027 and 2028. The funding commitment will support six Tier 1 tournaments scheduled over the two-year period, helping strengthen the game’s expanding global esports calendar and provide more stability for teams and players.

The announcement, made on March 9, signals what PGL describes as a “new era for professional teams.” The organiser intends to create a more sustainable competitive environment for organisations that receive invitations to its events, as well as for the players competing at the highest level of the first-person shooter.

Incentives and Prize Pools for Teams

A key component of the initiative is a new incentive programme designed to reward participation and boost audience engagement. Under the scheme, invited teams will share $2.2m (~£1.6m), while an additional $2.8m (~£2.09m) will be distributed annually based on viewership performance during tournaments. In addition, $6m (~£4.49m) will be allocated as prize money for top-performing teams at PGL’s Tier 1 events.

According to PGL CEO Silviu Stroie, the expanded incentives aim to attract the strongest teams and players in the scene. Stroie described the initiative as the organisation’s most significant commitment yet to the Counter-Strike ecosystem and expressed enthusiasm about delivering more major events to the community.

Enhanced Support for Players and Teams

Beyond prize money and incentives, PGL is introducing a hospitality programme aimed at improving the experience for players and staff. The organiser will cover travel costs for up to eight team members and provide dedicated practice rooms equipped with high-end gaming peripherals.

Teams will also have new opportunities to engage with fans during events. PGL plans to allow organisations to sell merchandise on-site and run fan-focused activations, helping strengthen the connection between teams and spectators.

Continued Expansion of PGL’s Esports Operations

The new investment further reinforces PGL’s position as one of the leading esports tournament organisers worldwide. Earlier this year, the company secured a three-year agreement with the city of Cluj-Napoca to host events there until 2029.

In addition, PGL has been expanding its list of partners for upcoming competitions. In February, the organiser partnered with ASUS ROG to provide gaming PCs and peripherals for main stages and practice facilities throughout the 2026 season.

Upcoming CS2 Tournament Schedule

PGL has also revealed the timeline for its 2027 and 2028 Counter-Strike 2 events, although host locations will be announced later. The organiser confirmed that three of the tournaments planned across the two years will take place within the Schengen Zone, with further details expected in the future.
