OverActive Media Unveils Major Announcements at Movistar KOICON

Posted : 11 December 2024

OverActive Media, the parent company of Movistar KOI, made several significant announcements at last week's Movistar KOICON event, with the most notable being the rebranding of MAD Lions to Movistar KOI. This change marks a new chapter for the esports organization as it expands its reach into Fortnite and hints at the LEC (League of Legends European Championship) heading to Madrid in April 2025.

The announcement regarding Movistar KOI's involvement in the LEC comes just after the EMEA competition revealed its plans to bring live events closer to fans during the Spring Split by collaborating with local teams.

Although specific details about Movistar KOI's LEC event remain scarce, the timing of this news follows the usual March-April window for the LEC Spring Split. The news has sparked anticipation within the esports community about what this could mean for the competition in Spain.

The event, held at Madrid's Palacios Vistalegre, hosted a live audience of 3,000 fans, highlighting the growing enthusiasm for esports in Spain. The transition from MAD Lions to Movistar KOI is coupled with a strategic partnership between OverActive Media and Telefónica, the parent company of Movistar. This marks the first instance in the LEC of a team having a naming partner, signaling a new era for the organization.

In addition to the renaming, Movistar KOI has undergone a slight rebranding, which was initially teased in October by KOI Founder Ibai Llanos. OverActive Media's acquisition of KOI and Movistar Riders in 2024 merged them with the MAD Lions brand to form a dominant Spanish esports force.

With the announcement of Movistar KOI’s participation in the LEC, the changes reflect broader shifts in the League of Legends EMEA ecosystem, including a revamped tier-two structure and an updated LEC format for 2025.
