LEC Commissioner Promises Changes After Summer Split 2025 Criticism

Posted : 01 September 2025

Riot Games’ LEC Commissioner, Artem Bykov, has responded to community criticism surrounding the ongoing LEC Summer Split 2025, promising a revised format for next year and increased transparency in future operations. Posting on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account, Bykov acknowledged that the current Summer Split structure did not meet expectations and outlined plans for improvements in 2026.

The 2025 LEC Summer Split, running from August 2 to September 28, features ten EMEA teams competing for an €80,000 (~£69,300) prize pool and direct qualification for the League of Legends World Championship for its top three finishers. Unlike previous Winter and Spring splits, the Summer Split divided teams into two single round-robin groups, reducing each team’s Group Stage matches from nine to four. Midway through the split, the league also revised its tiebreaker rules after the Head-to-Head Game Score criterion was mistakenly removed.

Bykov explained that the format changes were partly due to scheduling constraints, including a crowded calendar with the Mid-Season Invitational, the Esports World Cup, and Summer Finals. The league also had to accommodate the overlapping VALORANT Champions Tour, as both events share the Riot Games Arena in Berlin. These factors forced some LEC matches to take place on less popular weekdays, affecting viewership.

Addressing community concerns, Bykov confirmed that the Summer Split format would not return in 2026 and hinted at more competition days and an overall improved structure. He stressed that the league has learned valuable lessons from both Spring and Summer splits and is already planning adjustments to enhance competitiveness and fan experience in the upcoming season.
