Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds dialogue with esports leaders

Posted : 12 April 2024

India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, engaged in a significant dialogue with key figures from the country's esports and gaming sector, signaling a growing recognition of the industry's importance and potential. Among the participants were renowned personalities like Animesh ‘8Bit Thug’ Agarwal, Naman ‘Mortal’ Mathur, Tirth Mehta, and Ganesh ‘SkRossi’ Gangadhar, showcasing the diverse talent within India's gaming community.

The discussion delved into various aspects of the gaming landscape, including the government's acknowledgment of gamers' creativity in fostering industry growth and the crucial issue of women's participation in gaming. Moreover, the distinction between gaming and gambling was explored, highlighting the need for clarity and regulation in this evolving space.

With significant developments in the Indian esports scene over the past few years, including the re-entry of popular titles like Free Fire and BGMI (PUBG Mobile) into the market, as well as official recognition of esports as a multi-sport event in December 2022, the meeting underscores the sector's rising prominence and potential for further expansion. The recent entry of Honor of Kings into the Indian market further underscores the growing global interest in India's gaming landscape.

Amidst an ongoing important election in India, the engagement between Prime Minister Modi and esports stakeholders reflects a broader recognition of the industry's socio-economic significance and potential for growth.

Lokesh Suji, Director of Esports Federation of India and VP of the Asian Esports Federation (AESF), expressed optimism about the government's support in fostering opportunities for Indian esports athletes to excel both domestically and on the international stage, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration and support from policymakers in nurturing the Indian esports ecosystem.
