Esports bar chain Platform permanently closes its doors

Posted : 18 April 2024

UK-based gaming and esports bar chain Platform has permanently closed its doors, shutting down its two London-based bars located in Shoreditch and Canary Wharf, the latter of which opened just last year.

Since its establishment in 2018, Platform has been known for hosting various local esports-focused community events, including watch parties and social gatherings like Esports Insider’s Hall of Fame in 2022. Additionally, the chain secured a partnership with AGON by AOC.

The news of Platform's closure was initially reported by Esports News UK and later confirmed by Esports Insider. According to reports, Platform's partners received an internal message stating that the company has entered voluntary liquidation, with insolvency firm Antony Batty & Company LLP overseeing the process.

Despite this development, Platform has not officially acknowledged the closure on its own channels or updated its company information on Companies House, although its venues are listed as permanently closed on Google, and bookings are no longer available on the company's website.

Platform's closure is the latest in a series of gaming-focused venue shutdowns, including Liverpool's LevelTap, which closed earlier this month, and SideQuest's Westfield, London, location. These closures reflect the ongoing economic challenges faced by esports and gaming-focused businesses, particularly independent startups.

They also occur amidst the UK's hosting of major esports events like the League of Legends World Finals, BLAST Premier Spring Finals, and ESL One Birmingham, underscoring the complexities of the industry's landscape.
