ESL unveils grand return of Dota 2 to Birmingham in 2024 with $1 million prize pool

Posted : 13 December 2023

ESports tournament organizer ESL has revealed plans for a Dota 2 ESL One event in Birmingham, England, scheduled for April 22nd to 28th, 2024. Sponsored by Intel, the tournament boasts a substantial $1 million prize pool.

Aligned with the Dota 2 ESL Pro Tour (EPT), ESL One Birmingham will showcase 12 teams, with the top four from the EPT leaderboard earning spots and an additional eight determined through January's open and closed qualifiers.

The participating teams will be divided into two groups of six, with the top four from each advancing to the playoffs held at Birmingham's Resorts World Arena, boasting a capacity of 15,700. The event will award a total of 22,520 EPT leaderboard ranking points.

ESL's announcement of the tournament's theme, "Time to Brawl," highlights Birmingham's pub culture and pays homage to the competition's previous editions in the city. This marks the third instance of ESL bringing Dota 2 to Birmingham, following majors in 2018 and 2019. Notably, the 2020 edition, slated for Birmingham, moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dota 2's return to the UK reflects the growing trend of major esports events in the country, including Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, and League of Legends tournaments. In 2024, the UK is set to host prominent events such as the LoL World Championship final, BLAST Premier Spring Final, and PUBG Mobile's Global Championship.

Shane Clarke, Director of Game Ecosystems – Dota 2 at ESL FACEIT Group, expressed excitement about returning to Birmingham, emphasizing the vibrant and engaged Dota 2 community in the UK, anticipating memorable moments for both on-site and global audiences.
