Cody Schwab delivered one of the most remarkable comebacks in esports history by winning the GENESIS X3 Super Smash Bros. Melee Major, completing a grueling run through the Losers bracket. Speaking on X (formerly Twitter), Schwab reflected on his achievement, saying, “Against all odds, I somehow won GENESIS through 11 sets in Losers, through every heavy hitter. I’ve given this game everything I physically can, and despite everything, it’s been the greatest ride of my life.”
The Melee tournament at GENESIS X3 featured a stacked field, with top-ranked players like Zain Naghmi, Cody Schwab, and Juan ‘Hungrybox’ DeBiedma quickly finding themselves on the Losers side after early upsets. This forced Schwab to face some of the toughest competition right from the first day, including battles against Zain and Hungrybox, before reaching the Top 8.
Once in the Top 8, Schwab continued his dominance, starting against Kyle ‘Krudo’ and then dispatching Justin ‘Wizzrobe’ Hallett in a clean 3-0 set. In the Losers Semi-Finals, he faced Alexandra ‘Salt’ Rennie, whose rise in the competitive scene had earned her a passionate fan following. Despite the crowd’s support for Salt, Schwab’s precise gameplay and strategic Fox performance secured him the win and advancement to the Grand Finals.
In the final match, Schwab faced doubles partner Jake ‘Jmook’ DiRado. The first set was one-sided, with Schwab winning convincingly despite eating a green apple mid-match. After resetting the bracket, the rematch was tighter, but Schwab’s consistent play and mastery of Fox ultimately earned him the championship.
His victory at GENESIS X3 is widely regarded as one of the most intense and impressive Losers bracket triumphs in Super Smash Bros. Melee history, cementing his reputation as one of the game’s elite players.
