Cuban boxer Yoenis Tellez has been confirmed to face Brian Mendoza in a junior middleweight contest that will serve as the co-main event for the upcoming title fight between Sebastian Fundora and Keith Thurman on March 28 in Las Vegas. The bout will be part of a Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
The matchup replaces a previously scheduled heavyweight clash between Richard Torrez Jr. and Frank Sanchez, which was postponed after Sanchez encountered complications from a knee injury. The change reshaped the card but maintained a high-stakes bout in the co-feature slot.
Tellez, 25, enters the contest with an 11-1 record and eight knockouts. The Cuban prospect experienced the first defeat of his professional career last August when he lost a unanimous decision to Abass Baraou in a fight for the interim WBA junior middleweight title. However, he quickly rebounded with a stoppage victory over Kendo Castaneda in December and remains ranked among the top contenders in the 154-pound division.
Mendoza (23-4, 17 KOs) is known for his dramatic knockout win over Fundora in 2023 to capture the interim WBC title. Although he trailed on all three judges’ scorecards before delivering the decisive punch, the victory remains one of the most memorable moments of his career. Since then, Mendoza has endured mixed results, suffering defeats to Tim Tszyu and Serhii Bohachuk before returning to winning form with a technical knockout victory over Jesus Antonio Rojas in July.
The upcoming bout brings together two fighters eager to strengthen their standing in the competitive junior middleweight division. With both men seeking to rebuild momentum and move closer to another title opportunity, the co-main event adds significant intrigue to a fight card headlined by Fundora’s WBC title defense against Thurman.
