Oleksandr Usyk has officially been instructed by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) to defend his heavyweight title against New Zealand's Joseph Parker in a mandatory bout.
The Ukrainian fighter was crowned the undisputed heavyweight champion after defeating Britain’s Daniel Dubois with a fifth-round stoppage at Wembley Stadium. Usyk secured the victory with a powerful left-hand shot that floored Dubois, sealing his 24th consecutive win in the professional ring. With that result, the 38-year-old retained his WBA, WBC, and WBO titles, while reclaiming the IBF belt.
Following the historic win, Usyk hinted that Joseph Parker could be among his future challengers. That speculation became reality on Thursday when the WBO issued a formal letter mandating the title defence. Both camps have 30 days to agree on the terms of the fight; otherwise, the matter will proceed to a purse bid.
Parker, who defended his WBO interim title with a second-round stoppage of Martin Bakole in Riyadh earlier this year, is enjoying a strong run of form. That victory came after Bakole stepped in as a last-minute replacement for Dubois, who withdrew due to illness. Parker, a former WBO world champion between 2016 and 2018, is currently on a six-fight winning streak, having bounced back after his loss to Joe Joyce in 2022.
The upcoming negotiations set the stage for a high-stakes clash between two experienced heavyweights, with the winner set to further solidify their place at the top of the division.
