Usyk Shrugs Off Accusations Ahead of Dubois Rematch, Vows to Reclaim Undisputed Title

Posted : 01 May 2025

Oleksandr Usyk responded confidently to accusations of cheating and fakery ahead of his rematch with Daniel Dubois, insisting that he was ready to reclaim the undisputed heavyweight title for a second time. The fight, set for 19 July at Wembley Stadium, will be a return to the ring following their controversial encounter in August 2023, where Usyk won after recovering from a low blow, which the referee ruled as a shot below the belt.

The Ukrainian champion, still unbeaten at 38, holds the WBC, WBA, and WBO titles, while Dubois has since claimed the IBF belt vacated by Usyk. Despite the ongoing controversy surrounding their first fight in Wroclaw, Poland, Usyk remained calm and focused, telling reporters at a press conference that he was fully prepared for the upcoming clash.

Dubois’s trainer, Don Charles, further fueled the debate, accusing Usyk of "conning" the referee and the boxing world, but Usyk brushed off the remarks with a smile, maintaining that it was just "talking" and not something that affected him.

Usyk’s promoter, Alex Krassyuk, emphasized that the champion was still hungry and promised a new version of Usyk that fans had never seen before, with no more controversies to cloud the fight. Manager Egis Klimas also defended Usyk, stating that the accusations of cheating were unfounded, and insisted that Usyk’s recovery during the first fight was legitimate. He urged critics to direct their complaints at the referee rather than questioning Usyk’s integrity.

In contrast, Dubois was full of confidence, promising to take revenge for the previous fight. The 27-year-old boxer vowed to knock Usyk out, stating that he was "on fire" and ready for a "bloodbath" in the ring. Dubois eagerly anticipated the opportunity to settle the score, suggesting that Usyk would be doing a "funny dance" when he landed a knockout punch on the night.
