Usyk Defeats Fury Again to Retain Heavyweight Titles

Posted : 24 December 2024

Oleksandr Usyk successfully defended his unified heavyweight world titles by defeating Tyson Fury in a closely contested rematch in Saudi Arabia, solidifying his status as a generational great. This victory followed his previous triumph over Fury in May, where he handed the Brit his first career loss by split decision. Usyk's strategy and determination once again shone through at Riyadh's Kingdom Arena, where he retained his WBA (Super), WBC, and WBO titles.

Although Fury, 36, had some success in the first half of the fight, landing a few notable shots, it was Usyk's consistency and cleaner work that ultimately prevailed. The Ukrainian boxer maintained a higher punch volume and precision, which swayed the judges in his favor. All three judges scored the bout 116-112 in Usyk's favor, confirming his victory and extending his unbeaten professional record to 23-0.

Usyk, an Olympic gold medallist and former undisputed cruiserweight champion, expressed respect for his opponent, acknowledging Fury as a "great fighter" and emphasizing the significance of the 24 rounds they had fought together.

Despite his defeat, Fury, with a record of 34 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, showed frustration and firmly believed he had won the fight by at least three rounds. He left the ring without giving an interview, leaving many questions unanswered.

In a post-fight twist, IBF world champion Daniel Dubois entered the ring and called for a rematch with Usyk. Meanwhile, Fury, clearly agitated by the decision, voiced his disagreement with the judges' scores backstage, further fueling the tension surrounding the aftermath of this high-stakes encounter.
