The long-awaited heavyweight showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua could still fall apart depending on the outcome of Joshua’s next fight, according to promoter Frank Warren. The two British boxing stars have agreed to meet later this year, but uncertainty remains over whether the clash will actually take place.
Before any potential blockbuster bout, Anthony Joshua is scheduled to face relatively unknown Albanian boxer Kristian Prenga on 25 July in Saudi Arabia. Warren warned that a defeat for Joshua would end hopes of the Fury fight entirely, stressing the importance of that result.
Both fighters are former two-time world champions, with Fury’s camp confident the event would be one of the biggest in boxing history. Warren, who promotes Fury, believes the matchup would generate the highest payday of the Gypsy King’s career, surpassing his previous earnings from his fight with Oleksandr Usyk.
However, Fury may take an interim bout before facing Joshua, as the 37-year-old wants to remain active following his return to the ring earlier this year. Warren said Fury needs regular fights for both physical sharpness and mental focus while waiting for a confirmed date.
The proposed Fury vs Joshua clash could happen as early as October, but Warren admitted no official schedule has been locked in yet. He also suggested that the loser of the fight may consider retirement after such a high-stakes encounter.
While Saudi Arabia is financially backing the potential showdown, Warren expressed a preference for Wembley Stadium to host the event, calling it the natural home for such a major British boxing spectacle.
