Tyson Fury Says Anthony Joshua Fight Is in Doubt Over Promotional Dispute

Tyson Fury has raised fresh doubts over his long-awaited heavyweight showdown with Anthony Joshua, claiming a dispute between their promotional teams could put the December fight at risk.

Fury and Joshua are scheduled to meet at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on December 11, with the bout set to be broadcast globally on Netflix. The all-British clash was officially announced this week after years of failed negotiations.

However, disagreement has quickly emerged over the promotional role of UFC president Dana White. Netflix’s announcement identified White and Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh’s The Ring as being involved in the promotion, but Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn has strongly disputed White’s participation.

Hearn has argued that White’s involvement conflicts with contractual arrangements surrounding the fight. He said Netflix appeared not to have been aware of the agreement and insisted that White could not have a promotional role in the event.

Fury subsequently claimed on social media that Joshua and Hearn were attempting to withdraw from the contest. He attributed the situation to the dispute involving Hearn and White and said the disagreement was threatening what he described as a major fight for British boxing. These are Fury’s claims, and there has been no confirmation that Joshua has formally withdrawn.

The disagreement is the latest complication in a fight that has taken more than a decade to arrange. Previous attempts included negotiations for an undisputed heavyweight meeting in 2021, but Deontay Wilder’s successful arbitration action forced Fury to fulfil his obligation to a third fight with the American. A further attempt collapsed in 2022 despite Joshua agreeing to a 60-40 financial split.

The latest agreement finally secured Cardiff as the venue after lengthy discussions over whether the bout should take place in Britain or the United States. Hearn had pushed for the fight to be staged in the UK, while earlier negotiations had included a possible event at Madison Square Garden in New York.

For now, Fury and Joshua remain scheduled to fight on December 11, but the dispute over promotional responsibilities has introduced uncertainty just days after the contest was officially confirmed. A press conference involving the two fighters is scheduled for September 30 in London.
