Controversial Victory: Teofimo Lopez defends WBO light-welterweight title

Posted : 09 February 2024

Teofimo Lopez, the American WBO world light-welterweight titleholder, faced controversy in defending his title with a disputed unanimous points win against compatriot Jamaine Ortiz in Las Vegas.

Despite appearing to be outboxed over 12 rounds, the judges delivered a contentious decision with two scoring it 115-113 and one providing a highly disputed scorecard of 117-111, resulting in boos from the audience at the Michelob Ultra Arena.

Lopez's post-fight response, including directing a homophobic slur towards the crowd, added further controversy to the event.

The agile and elusive Ortiz, fighting in a southpaw stance, effectively utilized his reach advantage and quick footwork to frustrate Lopez, who struggled to establish a rhythm.

Despite Ortiz's defensive approach, he expressed confidence in his performance, stating, "He couldn't hit me, I was making him miss all night. 117-111 is just ridiculous."

Lopez, on the other hand, attributed the below-par performance to Ortiz's defensive strategy and called out Terence Crawford for a catchweight bout, emphasizing his readiness and hunger for the challenge.

Teofimo Lopez's unpredictable career trajectory continued with this bout, marked by highs such as defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 and claiming the light-welterweight title against Josh Taylor in June 2023, but also marred by unexpected defeats, notably against George Kambosos Jr in the following year.

The controversial win against Ortiz adds another layer to Lopez's career narrative, showcasing the challenges and unpredictability inherent in the sport of boxing.
