Nigerian boxers were the center of attention at the recently concluded 4th African Youth Games in Angola, delivering remarkable performances throughout the tournament. Coached by the experienced Anthony Konyegwachie, the team claimed two gold medals and one bronze in a commanding display.
Nigeria’s sole female boxer, Ayomide Shakirat Mayowa, showcased her potential by winning the country’s first gold medal. She triumphed over Bensallah Bouthenia of Algeria in the 48kg final via a split decision, marking a historic victory for the female contingent.
In the men’s 50kg category, Abijuwon Olalekan Farouq secured Nigeria’s second gold medal after his opponent, Bofenda Mabela of the Democratic Republic of Congo, failed to make weight, granting Farouq a walkover victory.
Joshua Solomon fought valiantly in the 70kg category but was halted in the semi-finals by Wisdom Pedro of Angola, losing via split decision. Solomon’s efforts earned him a bronze medal, completing Nigeria’s medal tally in the boxing events.
Thanks to their stellar performances in Luanda, both Ayomide Mayowa (48kg) and Abijuwon Farouq (50kg) have qualified for the Youth Olympic Games scheduled for October–November 2026 in Dakar, Senegal.
Vivian Azimene, Secretary General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), lauded the athletes for their grit and dedication. “The boxers justified the trust placed in them by the NBF board, the National Sports Commission, and all Nigerians. Their performance shows that boxing in Nigeria is on an upward trajectory,” she stated.
NBF Vice President Omonlei Imadu highlighted the federation’s commitment to developing Olympic-style boxing in Nigeria. “It’s a new dawn for boxing in the country. The success in Angola is just the beginning. We have a structured program for holistic development starting January 2026,” he said, also acknowledging the support from the National Sports Commission.
The Nigerian boxing team returned to Abuja on Saturday and is set to receive a grand reception in Lagos on Monday, organized by the Nigeria Boxing Federation.
