Team Lagos boxing prodigy, Idowu, promises gold medal

Posted : 24 May 2025

Team Lagos female boxing sensation, Idowu Mistura, has vowed to replicate her earlier success in the ring at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged Gateway Games, currently taking place in Abeokuta.

Idowu, after a comfortable first-round win over Rita Oyeleye from Borno State, is now poised to retain the title she earned as a gold medalist about three years ago.

The one-sided bout between Idowu and Oyeleye was held at the indoor sports hall of Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta. Idowu outpunched Oyeleye and ended the fight in the first round with a knockout.

The referee stopped the contest just minutes into the opening round, as Mistura’s overwhelming aggression and precision left him with no choice but to halt the fight.

There was a moment of tension in the arena after the bout, as medical personnel rushed to attend to Oyeleye, who had lost consciousness.

She was later revived and reported to be in stable condition, while medics continued to monitor her.

Mistura, who clinched gold at the last edition of the festival, said her commanding start is a sign of her sole objective—to retain her title.

“I came here with one goal: to defend my title and prove I’m still the best in my weight class. I respect my opponents, but I won’t hold back in the ring,” Mistura said after the match.

The Bariga-based boxer’s dominant performance has now set the tone for what promises to be an electrifying boxing tournament at OGUN 2025.
