Team Kano raises eyebrow over potential disqualification of boxer

Posted : 24 May 2025

As the Nigerian Weightlifting Federation appears to be on the verge of stripping Kano State of its gold medal at the ongoing 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024, the state contingent has raised concerns.

The Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Malam Ibrahim Umar Yakubu, also known as "FIFA", made the appeal at the Civic Centre in Ikenne.

It should be recalled that Kano State athlete Lucky Orobusa, competing in the men’s 109kg category, won a gold medal for the Pyramid City, while Daniel Adullihen of Edo State won silver and Patrick Barde of Bayelsa State took bronze.

However, the Nigerian Weightlifting Federation is now reportedly attempting to revoke Kano State’s gold medal, despite officials having already declared Lucky Orobusa the overall winner in the 109kg men’s category. The declaration was made immediately after the match by Technical Director Christopher Nwadei and Secretary General Melvina Ashinedu at the biennial multi-national event.

Chairman of the Commission, Malam Ibrahim Umar Yakubu, has called on all stakeholders to support the athlete from the commercial hub and ensure justice is served. He emphasized the importance of preserving the festival’s original purpose as a platform for promoting peace and unity across the country.
