Pimblett admits ego cost him UFC loss to Gaethje as he targets rematch

Posted : 29 April 2026

Paddy Pimblett has admitted that his mindset played a key role in his defeat to Justin Gaethje in their interim UFC lightweight title fight in January. The bout in Las Vegas ended Pimblett’s unbeaten UFC run, as he was outpointed over five rounds in a physically demanding contest where he struggled to gain momentum.

Reflecting on the fight on his YouTube channel, Pimblett said his desire to entertain and rely on striking exchanges may have worked against him. He explained that his ego influenced his approach, as he aimed for a knockout and a dramatic performance rather than sticking strictly to a disciplined strategy.

During the fight, Gaethje landed more strikes and secured two knockdowns, ultimately controlling large portions of the contest. The victory earned Gaethje the interim title and positioned him for a future clash with Ilia Topuria.

Pimblett, who has returned to training, is now preparing for a comeback expected at UFC 329 in July. While an opponent has yet to be confirmed, Benoit Saint-Denis is reportedly a leading candidate.

Despite the setback, Pimblett remains confident and has expressed interest in a future rematch with Gaethje. He said he hopes Gaethje defeats Topuria, setting up another opportunity for them to meet in the octagon, this time with lessons learned and improved fight discipline.
