Oscar Collazo Retains Flyweight Titles

Posted : 22 September 2025

Oscar Collazo extended his unbeaten record and retained his WBA and WBO flyweight titles in unusual circumstances, as Jayson Vayson’s corner halted their fighter midway through the seventh round in Indio, California.

The contest had been competitive, with Vayson showing resilience despite being under pressure from the Puerto Rican champion. But to the surprise of both the fighter and the audience, his assistant trainer suddenly jumped onto the ring apron, signaling the referee to wave off the bout.

A visibly confused Vayson returned to his corner as whistles and boos echoed around the venue. The 27-year-old admitted afterward that he did not agree with the decision, though he accepted it out of respect for his team’s judgment. “My corner thought I was breaking. I wanted to keep fighting, but I respect their decision for my safety,” Vayson said.

Collazo had started strongly, flooring the challenger in the opening round. Vayson responded well in the fourth, landing effective body shots, but as the fight progressed, Collazo’s accuracy and pressure put him comfortably ahead. At the time of the stoppage, the defending champion was leading on all three judges’ scorecards. The victory moved the 28-year-old Puerto Rican’s professional record to 13-0.

In the co-main event, American star Gabriela Fundora successfully defended her undisputed flyweight crown against Canada’s Alexas Kubicki. Fundora unleashed relentless combinations and forced the referee to intervene in the seventh round, extending her perfect record to 17 wins.
