Oluwasegun Olanrewaju’s Remains Set for Return to Nigeria on June 17

Posted : 12 June 2025

The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) has announced that the remains of Nigerian boxer Oluwasegun "Success" Olanrewaju will be flown back to Nigeria on Tuesday, June 17. This marks the end of almost three months of legal and diplomatic efforts following his tragic death in Ghana.

Olanrewaju, 40, collapsed during a match against Ghana's Jon Mbanugu on March 29 at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra. Although he had been cleared to fight medically, he was declared dead shortly after the incident at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Initial reports pointed to cardiac arrest as the cause, although an autopsy was conducted to confirm the exact cause of death.

The delay in repatriating his body was due to the need for a coroner's report and other legal formalities. A committee appointed by the Ghanaian government investigated the incident and revealed that Olanrewaju had an enlarged heart, a common condition among athletes. The committee also expressed concerns over the Ghana Boxing Authority’s failure to provide adequate medical supervision during the event.

In a letter dated June 10 to the President of the Ghana Boxing Authority, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, President of the NBBofC, confirmed the arrangements for Olanrewaju’s return. The letter specified that the body would be sent back in a casket and not in a body bag, and it also requested the release of Olanrewaju’s fight purse as well as compensation for his family.

The tragic death of Olanrewaju has ignited conversations about the safety measures in African boxing and the overall well-being of fighters. His family, particularly his mother, has expressed deep anguish over the prolonged delay in bringing him home, emphasizing the emotional toll of the wait.

The return of Olanrewaju’s remains is expected to provide some measure of closure to his grieving family and the Nigerian boxing community. His untimely death continues to fuel calls for better safety standards and greater support for boxers across the continent.
