The upcoming heavyweight showdown between Oleksandr Usyk and Rico Verhoeven in Egypt has all the ingredients of a Hollywood spectacle. Set against the backdrop of the famous Pyramids of Giza, the fight will see boxing’s unified heavyweight champion face one of kickboxing’s most dominant figures on Saturday night.
Despite the unusual crossover appeal, Usyk insists the contest is far from entertainment alone. The Ukrainian star is treating the bout with complete seriousness, even though Verhoeven has limited professional boxing experience. For Usyk, every fight demands full preparation regardless of his opponent’s background.
Speaking from his training camp in Spain, the 39-year-old revealed he has no plans to retire after this event. Usyk explained that he still expects to compete in two or three more fights before stepping away from boxing. He also hinted at larger ambitions beyond the ring, including business ventures and creating major sporting events.
Verhoeven enters the contest with an outstanding record in kickboxing. The Dutch fighter has dominated the heavyweight division in Glory Kickboxing for more than a decade, successfully defending his title 13 times. However, his experience in professional boxing remains limited, with only one recorded bout dating back to 2014.
Usyk’s achievements in boxing place him among the sport’s modern greats. Since capturing Olympic gold in 2012, he has conquered both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, becoming undisputed champion in each. Along the way, he secured multiple victories over leading British heavyweights including Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois.
Even with Verhoeven crossing over from another combat sport, Usyk says his approach has not changed. He continues to follow an intense training schedule focused on sparring, conditioning and endurance work, preparing with the same mindset he used against elite heavyweight rivals.
According to Usyk, the fight is not designed as a staged spectacle. Instead, he views it as a genuine contest that demands total focus and discipline, regardless of the unique storyline surrounding the event.
