The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has confirmed the date for national trials to select athletes for the 2026 national team.
According to a letter issued on Friday by NWF Secretary General Oluwasegun Bode Ademisoro, the trials will begin on January 6, 2026, at the Indoor Sports Hall of Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
The letter explained that the trials became necessary following the indefinite postponement of the 4th Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Championship, which is normally used to rank national team athletes. The postponement came in honour of Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away less than 48 hours before the event.
The Secretary General emphasized that the trials are designed to ensure fairness, meritocracy, and competitive integrity in selecting athletes to represent Nigeria in 2026.
The trials will cover only four women’s weight categories: 53kg, 57kg, 62kg, and 67kg. Each category will feature the top four wrestlers based on their performances in major tournaments such as the National Championships and the National Sports Festival.
The invited wrestlers are as follows:
53 kg Category:
57 kg Category:
62 kg Category:
68 kg Category:
The NWF also confirmed that the new date for the 4th Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Championship will be communicated later, which will be used to determine the rankings for the other weight categories.
