NWF President, Daniel Igali commends Nigerian female wrestlers' performance

Posted : 10 March 2024

The President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Dr. Daniel Igali, has applauded the sensational performance of Nigerian wrestlers after they secured six finals in the female wrestling event on Sunday.

Olympic silver medalist Blessing Oborodudu and world medalist Odunayo Adekuoroye led the list of finalists, joined by Mercy Genesis and Esther Kolawole. Hannah Reuben and Ogunsanya Christiana also made it through to the final.

Impressed with the emphatic victory, Daniel Igali expressed satisfaction with the incredible outing by the girls.

"I've been very impressed with the way they wrestled, and I think if they continue on that trajectory, Nigeria should be hopeful of many gold medals in the evening," Igali stated.

"I thank Nigerians, particularly the Bayelsa State Government, for always supporting our activities, and we hope to make everyone proud later when the final matches resume."

Daniel Igali also used the medium to commend President Bola Tinubu for rewarding the hard work of sportsmen and wished that the gesture is extended to those who would be making the country proud at the African Games.

"The President has set a precedent of rewarding silver medalists and gold flats and other encouragements, necessary because that's what he did with the Super Eagles at AFCON, and I hope that would be extended."

"I'm happy that these wrestlers are now eligible for such a gesture which will serve as more motivation for other athletes across the country."

The final matches for the female wrestling event will resume at 5 p.m Ghanaian time and 6 p.m Nigerian time.
