NMMA Partners with AFC to Boost Grassroots Mixed Martial Arts

Posted : 14 September 2025

The Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NMMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to developing the sport at the grassroots level through a new partnership with the AFC World Series. Lagos is currently hosting the first of such grassroots events aimed at promoting MMA across Nigeria.

Victor Akhimien, Technical Director of the NMMA, said the collaboration with AFC World Series is a significant step in building a strong foundation for the sport. He emphasized that the future of MMA in Nigeria depends largely on sponsors willing to support and invest in its growth.

“We are very proud of what AFC World Series is doing and we fully support the MMA brand to make it a huge success. Significant funds have gone into this event, and we are confident of delivering a top-class, action-packed spectacle for the fans,” Akhimien said.

He added that the federation frequently organizes training courses to guide aspiring fighters, particularly those transitioning from kickboxing, stressing that nurturing young talent is central to their mission.

Over two days of competition, fighters showcased their skills and entertained fans at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.

Among the standout performers, Joseph Jackson secured victory in the 65.8kg category, expressing confidence about achieving greater success in his career. His opponent, Goodnews John, who lost the bout, said it was his first MMA fight and described the experience as a valuable learning curve after switching from kickboxing.

Plateau State’s Moses Kure delivered a dominant display, defeating Kenneth Love with a two-minute submission. He expressed pride in his performance and eagerness to continue showcasing his passion for the sport. Other notable results included Olukolade Oreofe’s win over Daniel Folarin in three rounds, and Josiah Joseph’s submission victory against Heaven Jameson in the 65.8kg category.

With more than 100 fighters competing, the event, which runs from September 11 to 14, is expected to uncover fresh talent and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global MMA scene.
