Nigerian quartet dominate at NAIA Championships, signal Olympic promise

Posted : 18 March 2026

Nigeria's women wrestlers competing in the United States have sent a strong message ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games, clinching four gold medals at the 2026 NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championships.

The impressive outing by the Nigerian quartet not only underlines the country's growing influence in global wrestling but also highlights the effectiveness of ongoing development programmes targeting elite performance on the international stage.

Leading the charge was Christinah Ogunsanya in the 117 lbs category, whose composed and technically sound performances earned her the national title and All-American honours.

Jumoke Adekoye maintained the momentum in the 131 lbs division, combining tactical discipline with resilience to secure another gold for Nigeria.

Esther Kolawole further reinforced Nigeria's dominance in the 138 lbs class, delivering one of the standout performances of the tournament. Her wealth of international experience proved decisive, as she recorded the highest number of technical falls in the competition.

Rounding off the golden sweep, Mercy Adekuoroye claimed top spot in the 160 lbs category, showcasing maturity and tactical intelligence in high-pressure moments. Her victory also adds to the legacy of the Adekuoroye family in Nigerian wrestling.

The NAIA championship, which featured over 210 athletes across 10 weight divisions, served as a critical platform for assessing emerging talents and fine-tuning competitive readiness.

Reacting to the performance, national women's wrestling coach Akuh Purity described the results as a clear indication of Nigeria's rising profile in international collegiate wrestling.

She noted that beyond the medals, the athletes' achievements reflect a broader strategy aimed at exposing Nigerian wrestlers to high-level competition abroad, thereby strengthening the country's Olympic prospects.

Purity also commended the leadership of Nigeria Wrestling Federation President, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for prioritising grassroots development and structured talent pathways.

According to her, the success recorded in the United States validates the federation's long-term investment model and serves as a key benchmark in Nigeria's build-up to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

She added that the performance marks a significant boost for African representation in NAIA wrestling, while reinforcing Nigeria's position as a powerhouse in women's wrestling.

Nigeria's four gold medals at the 2026 NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championships mark a major milestone in the country's journey toward Los Angeles 2028. The performances of Ogunsanya, Adekoye, Kolawole, and Adekuoroye validate the federation's structured development approach and signal genuine medal contention at the Olympics.

With strong institutional backing and a clear competitive pathway, Nigeria's women wrestlers are firmly on course to make a lasting impact on the global stage.
