The Nigeria Police Force has taken Remi Aboderin into custody following a targeted raid at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos. Aboderin serves as the Secretary General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC). Officials from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of Area C conducted the operation on Monday, April 27, 2026.
Security operatives reportedly acted on specific intelligence regarding the possession of illegal documents. During the bust at the NBBofC office, police allegedly discovered various forged items. These included counterfeit National Identification Numbers (NIN) and several fraudulent identity cards.
Authorities believe these documents were utilized to facilitate unauthorized or fraudulent boxing activities within the country. The arrest marks a significant development in ongoing efforts to sanitize the administrative side of Nigerian professional boxing. Aboderin has been a prominent figure in the sport for years, making these allegations particularly impactful for the federation.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigators look deeper into the extent of the document forgery. Law enforcement agents are working to determine if other individuals within the boxing board were involved in the scheme. This investigation aims to uncover how long these counterfeit IDs have been in circulation.
Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Command for an official statement were not immediately successful at the time of this report. The NBBofC has also yet to release a formal response regarding the status of its Secretary General. Stakeholders in the Nigerian boxing community are currently awaiting further updates on the legal proceedings.
The arrest could have significant implications for upcoming boxing bouts and administrative approvals overseen by the board. If the allegations are proven, it may lead to a major restructuring of the NBBofC leadership. For now, the sport faces a period of uncertainty as the criminal investigation continues in Lagos.
