Nigerian Customs promises more support to grassroots development of wrestling in Nigeria

Posted : 18 January 2024

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Wale Adeniyi, has stated that he will continue to support the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) to develop the sport in the country.

Adeniyi expressed gratitude for being part of the NWF board, contributing his quota to the grassroots development of the sport. The NWF board, led by Federation President Daniel Igali, paid a courtesy visit to the new CG to congratulate him on his appointment.

“I pledge that I will continue to provide support through the board, not only as a member but also as a representative of the Nigerian Customs Service. As a board member of the NWF, I thank God for His mercies upon me because my membership has positively contributed to my career progression.

"We need to promote this sport (wrestling) to other arenas and levels, such as university games, paramilitary games, and the national youth festival. We must engage wrestlers from a young age so that they can gain the necessary experience and become professionals in the field before aging."

Adeniyi mentioned that customs would collaborate with NWF to achieve the desired development of the sport in the country.

“We will explore areas where customs can collaborate with the federation to ensure the development of the sport. We aim to restore our position to the enviable status we had in our glorious days of involvement in sports."

“We used to have a strong football team and dominance in athletics. In volleyball, we were three-time back-to-back national champions and also participated in continental championships in the last two seasons. Our basketball team is currently the defending national champion. We have left our mark in the sports sector."

“We want to use sports as a platform to contribute to national development, and this would be my dream working with my management and the NWF board,” he stated.

NWF President Igali expressed pride in having Adeniyi as the number one customs officer in the country.

“You have positively contributed to the development of the sport and have personally supported our athletes in various ways, especially through encouragement,” Igali said.

“I personally thank you for your financial support in the development of the sport. We came to congratulate you and to thank and encourage everyone working with you in providing necessary support. We believe that with your capability, you will transform NCS,” he added.

Igali also extended gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for finding Adeniyi worthy to occupy the position of the CG, NCS.
