Nigeria to Host Historic Inaugural African Boxing Congress and Gala Night

Posted : 27 November 2025

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), under the leadership of His Excellency Hon. Wale Edun, has been granted the hosting rights for the inaugural African Boxing Congress and Boxing Gala Night.

African Boxing serves as the continental governing body for the sport and operates under World Boxing, the global authority for Olympic-style boxing. In a letter addressed to the NBF, the organization described Nigeria as a strategic nation capable of driving the holistic development of boxing across Africa.

The letter also confirmed the appointment of NBF Vice President, Hon. Omonlei Imadu, as a member of the African Boxing Working Committee. He will also serve as Head of Organisation for the upcoming Congress.

Both the African Boxing Congress and the Gala Night are scheduled to take place on Sunday, 28th December 2025, in Lagos, Nigeria.

Hon. Imadu expressed the NBF’s commitment to hosting a successful event, emphasizing its significance for African boxing.
“As a federation, we will do everything in our power to host a successful event in December. As Head of Organisation, I am particularly excited about having the congress in Nigeria, as it will position both the NBF and our nation as a central hub for the highest boxing decision-making body on the continent,” Imadu said.

Hosting the African Boxing Congress positions Nigeria to potentially host the boxing qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in Africa. The event will also enhance the NBF’s ability to attract developmental programs aimed at advancing Olympic-style boxing in the country.

In addition, African Boxing has announced the establishment of its headquarters in Lagos, further solidifying Nigeria’s central role in continental boxing governance. The inaugural Congress will bring together representatives from over twenty affiliated national federations from across Africa in Lagos.
