Nigeria's Boxing Woes Deepen as Akintola Exits Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria's boxing campaign at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow suffered another significant blow on Saturday night as David Akintola was knocked out in the opening round of the men's 80kg event, further denting the country's hopes of winning a medal in the sport.

Akintola lost 4-1 on points to Tanzania's Yusef Lucasi Changalewa in their Round of 32 contest at the SEC Centre, becoming the second Nigerian boxer to crash out at the first hurdle.

The Nigerian found it difficult to cope with Changalewa's speed, movement, and accuracy throughout the three-round contest.

The Tanzanian controlled the bout with crisp combinations and effective counter-attacks, consistently landing the cleaner punches while preventing Akintola from settling into his rhythm.

The judges awarded the contest 4-1 in favour of Changalewa, who advanced to the Round of 16, where he will take on Kenya's Robert Okaka.

Akintola's elimination came barely 24 hours after fellow Nigerian Ayomide Foly Hassan suffered a first-round exit in the men's 70kg division.

Hassan was comprehensively beaten 4-0 on points by Lesotho's Refiloe in Friday's Round of 32 contest, leaving Nigeria without a victory in boxing so far at the Games.

With two boxers already eliminated in successive bouts, Team Nigeria's prospects of reaching the podium have become increasingly uncertain as the remaining athletes face mounting pressure to revive the nation's campaign.

Elsewhere in the men's 80kg division, Uganda's Alfred Ojok delivered a commanding performance to defeat Kilani Anitelea-Launiu of Niue 5-0 and book his place in the Round of 16.

Ojok will next face England's Dimaji Shittu in one of the most anticipated match-ups of the weight category.

With Nigeria's early exits continuing to mount, attention now turns to the remaining members of the boxing team, who will be aiming to keep the country's medal aspirations alive and produce stronger performances in the bouts ahead.
