Nigeria's Adeshina Bags Silver Medal at Saudi Solidarity Games in Riyadh

Posted : 11 November 2025

Nigeria’s sole female pugilist at the 6th edition of the Saudi Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Adeshina Zainab Motunrayo, clinched a silver medal in the Women’s 51kg boxing category.

Zainab displayed grit and tenacity before succumbing to the superior technique and power of Turkey’s Rabia Topuz in their final bout on Monday night. The referee stopped the contest in the third round after Zainab received two counts.

Motunrayo, who had earlier defeated Algeria’s Mansouri Fatiha 4-1 in the semi-finals, takes solace in the silver medal, while Rabia Topuz walked away with the gold.

The Nigerian boxing contingent, led by coach Oyeleye Abayomi, included Raheem Ridwan in the Men’s 65kg welterweight and Adeshina Zainab in the Women’s 51kg flyweight.

Ridwan, meanwhile, lost in the semi-finals to Uzbekistan’s Abdullahi Madaminov by split decision (4-1) after three rounds of action in the Men’s 65kg contest.

Omonlei Imadu, Vice President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), praised the boxers for their courage and determination at the event in Riyadh. He assured that Nigeria would continue to assert dominance in future editions.

The NBF will now shift focus to preparing the country’s pugilists for major international qualifiers in 2026, alongside several grassroots programs aimed at discovering boxing talent across the nation.
