The Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria (KBFN) has received high praise for its national team’s outstanding performance at the recent Africa Union Kickboxing Championships Open, held in Douala, Cameroon. President Wilson Okon expressed his delight at the haul of medals brought home by the athletes, praising their dedication and signalling a promising future for kickboxing in Nigeria.
In a statement to the press on Friday, Okon congratulated the fighters for demonstrating resilience, discipline, and technical prowess on the continental stage. “Our athletes have shown exceptional spirit and skill,” he remarked. “Their success at the championships is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved—from coaches and referees to officials and support staff.”
Although specific medal tallies were not officially disclosed by KBFN, reports suggest that Nigeria secured a range of podium finishes across multiple weight categories, underscoring the depth and breadth of talent within the squad.
Reflecting on the achievement, Okon stressed that the results mark a significant breakthrough for the federation’s long-term development strategy. “We have invested in grassroots programmes, technical training, and international exposure over the past few years. Today, we’re beginning to see those efforts pay off,” he noted.
The federation head also pledged continued support for athletes to compete at higher levels, hinting at plans to enhance coach education, upgrade training facilities, and expand participation in continental and global events.
Team Nigeria’s performance in Cameroon not only bolsters national pride but also provides a platform for kickboxing to grow across the country. With increased momentum, Okon anticipates a stronger showing at future competitions, including the African Games and World Championships.
The Africa Union Kickboxing Championships Open in Cameroon is a key event on the African kickboxing calendar, featuring top talent from the continent. For Nigeria, the results serve as a validation of ongoing efforts to elevate the country’s status in combat sports, and reinforce the federation’s ambition to become a competitive force regionally and globally.
