Nigeria Boxing Federation Commends Boxers’ Spirit at 2026 Commonwealth Trials

Posted : 10 March 2026

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has lauded the dedication and sportsmanship displayed by athletes during the National Open Commonwealth Games trials held in Lagos.

The four-day competition at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex, National Stadium, featured 128 participants, comprising 101 men and 27 women, and concluded with 10 champions crowned across different weight categories.

Notably, two UK-based diaspora fighters, Patricia Mbata and Kenneth Anigboro, claimed titles in the women’s +70kg and men’s 90kg divisions, respectively.

Wale Edun, President of the NBF and Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, praised the boxers for their exemplary conduct and commitment.

“I am excited by the turnout of boxers from within and outside the country for the trials. In major competitions like the Commonwealth Games, our athletes demonstrated maturity and sportsmanship throughout the exercise,” he said.

Edun stressed that while only a select few will compete in Glasgow, the federation remains committed to supporting all participants and encouraging them to continue striving for excellence.

The federation has confirmed a list of 20 boxers advancing to the final phase of trials, including winners and finalists from the recent event. The women’s roster features African Games champion Patricia Mbata, Happiness Uddete, Fathia Gafar, and Kadijat Ajisola, among others. The men’s division includes Kenneth Anigboro, Michael Ogunremi, Habeeb Qazeem, and Wahab Abdulrahman, with others joining to form a 40-athlete pool for the final assessment. From this group, 10 boxers will earn the honor of representing Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
