Emanuel Navarrete successfully retained his WBO super-featherweight title on Saturday after a technical decision win over previously undefeated Charly Suarez in San Diego. The bout was called off after seven rounds due to a deep cut above Navarrete’s left eye, which was caused by an accidental head clash in the sixth round.
With the fight unable to continue, the judges' scorecards were consulted, and all three sided with Navarrete, scoring the contest 77-76, 77-76, and 78-75 in his favor.
Navarrete, now holding a record of 40 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw, was making his fourth title defense. He had some difficulty at the weigh-in, initially failing to make the 130-pound limit but succeeded after a second attempt within the allowed time.
Despite the weight scare and the bloody injury, Navarrete’s aggressive style and control through most of the bout gave him the edge on the cards when the fight was halted.
For 36-year-old Charly Suarez, the night ended in disappointment as he suffered the first loss of his career, bringing his record to 18-1.
The Filipino challenger had hoped to capture his first world title but was hampered by multiple head clashes, the first of which left him visibly shaken in round four. The second, more damaging collision ultimately brought the contest to a premature end, cutting short his bid for championship glory.
